Each Orisha has movements and dances that are specific to that Spirit. These movements reflect the force of nature that the Orisha has power over and the use of the tools of their trades. Ogun uses a machete to cut a path Shango moves powerfully and Ochun has a hand movement that reflects her importance status and the flow of the sweet waters. All these movements and more have there place in Salsa. If you ever start feeling board with Salsa then look towards the Orisha.

    • Orishas             The Yoruba people of Africa bought with them to Cuba their beliefs and religion, they called him Olodumare along with spirits, the Orisha, each of whom have their own identity and colours. The main ones are listed below. The dance for each Orisha reflects the force of nature that each has power over. The colours worn by the dancers and the implements used are kept true to the individual Orisha. The religion is alive and the Orisha have there place in everyday life. This means that dancing to one of the Orisha has deep and purposeful meanings that are as relevant today as there were centuries ago.


    Elegua - black and red,
    always start with homage to Elegua. He is the guardian and is often found by entrance to the house. Give him gifts of candy, cigars and rum. "Omi Tutu, Ana Tutu, Tutu lle, Tutu Laroye"

     

    Ochun - gold and orange, She is owner of the sweet waters, rivers, lakes and rain. Love and fertility. Often seen with a fan and mirror

     

    Shango - red and white, warrior King, He is the Orisha of thunder ("Cabio sile Shango") and 
    dance. He carries a double headed axe.


    Yemaya - blue and crystal,
      She is Orisha of the oceans and seas. Oya -maroon, She rules the winds and is a warrior at the side of Shango.


    Obatala - white, "The king of the White Cloth", wisdom and clarity, guardian of sufferes of metal  illness and addictions.
