         Cuban Music

Salsa music is Salsa music because of just one main ingredient  the underlying rhythm of the clave. In Salsa the clave has a couple of  basic forms that get improvised on by different groups but it is always there. Even if you cant tune your ears to hear the clave in a piece of music you will know 100% whether its Salsa or not. This is because the flavour the Clave gives the Music. Have you ever wondered why dancing Salas to pop music is so difficult ? (Not to mention a total crime!) its because there is no Clave.

Dances such as Rumba can easily be danced with a clave alone. Add in a few wood box's and an old metal cup hit with a spoon and you start wondering why you have even got a CD player. Indeed the only thing missing for an instant street party would be a few bottles of Rum, pork, some rice and black beans.

Origins of Cuban Salsa

Guiro
Dried hollowed shell of a Gourd. A stick is scraped over the groves in long or short strokes to give a rasping sound.

Clave

Two wooden sticks is all it takes to get the Cuban flavour.
