Expressions, words and their meanings.

In the course of time you will start coming across Spanish words and expressions that keep coming up. Some times on tracks off CD’s sometimes just called out when dancing., here’s a few to get you started. I don’t speak Spanish so if I have anything wrong let me know and I will just die with embarrassment and put it right.
 

Ahi Nama !             Expression with the meaning lets get going ! “that’s it” etc

Bailar                      Dance

Bolero                    Cuban Bolero is a slow dance( and music ), from Santiago de Cuban, pre 1900.

Casino                   The Cuban step used in Cuban Salsa and la Rueda de Casino. Comes from the dancing in Cuba’s Casinos.

la Clave                 The Rhythmic patten behind Afro-Cuban music

Conga’s                   Cuban drum, developed from African drums.

Cuba Libra             Rum and Coke

Havana Club          The most well know of Cuba’s rums, (made from sugar cane)

Loco                       Crazy

Manana                  Tomorrow, (the deeper meaning is ” not today “)

Mojito                    Cuban cocktail, rum based.

Musica                   Music ( House of Music - - Casa de la Musica )

Ritmo                     Rhythm

la rueda                  Wheel

Salsa                      Sauce

Son                       The predecessor of Cuban Salsa. Son dance and Music is still very popular

Tengo Calor          I’m Hot ( common complaint in UK clubs )

Timba                   A style of music, a counterpart of Salsa
